The Sound Shore Stars is a family of volunteers, athletes and coaches in the Sound Shore region of Westchester County, New York.  Our athletes are adults with intellectual disabilities who dedicate time, energy, ability and spirit to training for Special Olympics competitions.  In operation since 2001, every season has had wins and losses - and every season has been victorious!

Jennifer Wong won female athlete of the year at Spring Games on 4/20/24 at West Point. She returned to the Sound Shore Stars program in the 2023-2024 season after a long medical recovery since 11/2022. After surgeries, falls, multiple doctors’ appointments, lots of physical therapy, and having to move back home, Jennifer was able to overcome it all to get back to her group home and return to sports better than ever! Jennifer had to regain her balance. She practices each sport with her group home staff and continues to be incredibly dedicated to each sport, including golf. She is always thinking ahead about competitions and how she can improve.

Captain Andrew R. Houghton Memorial Award

Background information:

Captain Andy Houghton was the cadet-in-charge of the Orange County Spring Games his junior and senior years at West Point.  This is why, coupled with what you will read below, SONY-HVR dedicated the 2006 Spring Games WEST in Captain Houghton’s memory.

The following was taken directly from Capt. Houghton’s Foundation website:

Andy was a soldier. He was serving his country in Operation Iraqi Freedom when he sustained injuries while on patrol July 10, 2004, near Samarra Iraq. Andy was hit by RPG rocket near the left eye and forehead, which required several surgeries before he could leave Baghdad and be transported to Landstuhl, Germany, and then on to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC, for further treatment. He survived his injuries for about three weeks before passing on August 9, 2004. Andy fought a brave fight, served his nation with honor, and gave the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of his nation and freedom for all.

Describing who Andy was as an Army Officer, West Point Graduate, Person, about him, it still seems inadequate to anyone that had the honor and privilege of knowing him. Andy was one of those rare people that was able to talk to anyone no matter how young or old, no matter how simple or sophisticated, and make them feel good about themselves. He was a man of vision, character and principle.

Capt. Houghton’s life truly exemplified the meaning of the words:

“Let Me Be Brave In The Attempt”

Danny was selected as an athlete that best exemplifies the qualities that Capt. Andy Houghton quietly conveyed to everyone he met, while always “being brave in the attempt.”

Danny Colangelo won the Captain Andrew R. Houghton Memorial award at Spring Games at West Point on 4/20/24. Danny is an athlete who goes out of his way to say hi to all coaches and athletes when he arrives at practice. He is a dedicated athlete to the Sound Shore Stars team. Danny volunteered to be goalie for the new sport of floorball after 1 practice with no previous goalie experience in floor hockey or knowledge of floorball. Danny motivates the team and is always the first one to put his hand in for the team huddle and cheer! He works hard at each sport and is always encouraging his teammates! His dedication to the team, trying something brand new, and continuing to push himself to excel, grow, and develop as an athlete and young man exemplifies being brave in the attempt every day.
